From the syllabus:
An analysis of femininity as constructed by a film in unit I, or masculinity as constructed by a film in unit II (3-4 pp.). You must analyze at least one scene in detail as part of your commentary.
Guidelines:
1. The paper is only three to four pages long, so don’t waste time with lots of general statements. Get started on the details of your analysis right away.
2. You should concentrate on one film in either Unit I or Unit II. If you want to bring in a scene from another film in that unit for comparison, you may, but beware: I’m primarily interested in a richly detailed analysis of one film, not a broad comparison of many films.
3. You should refer to our FTC readings to give your analysis some theoretical/critical “heft.” I’ll expect to see at least one of the FTC essays cited in your paper. Be aware, though, that some critics and theoreticians are better than others at detailed cinematic analysis, so don’t fall into the trap of imitating these writers to the point of excluding close reading of scenes from the film—see below.
4. Be sure to focus on one, two, or at most three scenes from your film in your analysis. I’m looking for specific work with cinematic language here: sound, lighting, acting, costume/makeup, setting, cinematography, the works. Don’t just talk about plot and character.
5. Remember that generalizations are useful, but only as a way of synthesizing perspectives on specific analyses. Believe it or not, the more specific you are, the easier it will be to write your paper. If you stick to generalizations, you’re likely to find the paper very difficult to write.
6. Don’t hesitate to email or phone (x1131) with any questions or concerns. You can also drop by the office during office hours. Appointments are always a possibility as well.
